Since 2011, the country of Syria has been in a brutal civil war that has put everyone in the country in immediate danger. With major conflict between the state and the people, thousands of civilians have been killed and many more are completely cut off from basic necessities such as food and healthcare. The Syrian citizens have very little freedom, as they are in constant danger and are blocked from normal life. Desperation has caused over 5.6 million Syrian citizens to seek refuge and freedom elsewhere, and over 3.5 million of them have found their new or temporary homes in Turkey. The Turkish government has been mostly helpful and welcoming to the Syrian refugees, even allowing them to apply for Turkish citizenship after 5 years in the country, but the Turkish citizens have not been so open. They worry that as more Syrians enter the country their jobs will be stolen and their country overrun with a foreign religion.
